Talking Textiles is an e-textile project that integrates conductive materials and capacitive touch sensors to create interactive interfaces that respond to touch with sound in real time. Could textiles that „speak“ through their inherent sounds open new ways to support mental well-being? Grounded in ASMR principles, the work investigates how amplifying subtle material sounds—such as fiber friction and haptic interactions—can support emotional regulation and offer a sensory approach in Focusing on their therapeutic potential, the project embeds carefully curated fragrance blends into soft fabrics. The particular idea is to alleviate emotional changes associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), by targeting 4 symptoms: irritability, anxiety, tiredness and concentration disorder. The fragrance blends are incorporated into the knitted surfaces of natural fibres using microencapsulation technology to ensure their controlled and gradual release. This feature enables users to discreetly alleviate specific emotions by manipulating the textile surface, which emits the desired fragrance upon contact. Vaiven strives to create a supportive environment that empowers women during challenging times. The workshop presents recipes for bioplastic from carrageenan algae, biofoam from agar agar, and bioyarn from alginate. Participants experiment with textures, incorporate other organic materials and natural dyes, and have the opportunity to use the open-source biofibers desktop spinning machine—adapted to extrude alginate-based yarn directly into a calcium chloride bath for cross-linking—to create fine bioyarn.
